Somewhere to start. In development · Delhi pilot

What if women didn’t have to decide everything immediately?

Didi is a nonprofit initiative building a simple, private way for women in India to document what happened, preserve potential evidence and understand their options.

Something happened? Tell Didi.

Being developed for an initial Delhi pilot by Drift.

A nonprofit initiative. Intended to be free for women. Her account. Her material. Her decision.
01 The problem

Too much disappears before the system ever sees it.

Followed home.Touched on the metro. Harassed outside university.Threatening messages.

She may not know whether she wants to go to the police. She may not even know whether what happened constitutes an offence.

And she shouldn’t have to make every decision immediately. But memories fade, messages disappear and CCTV is overwritten while she decides.

Didi separates preserving what happened from deciding what to do about it.

02 / A simple beginning

Just tell
Didi.

In her own words.
At her own pace.

Initially on WhatsApp, Didi is being designed to help a woman preserve her account and relevant digital material through a simple conversation.

WomanDidi, something happened last night. I’m not sure if I want to report it.
DidiThat’s okay. You don’t need to decide that right now.

03 What stays

Start with what
she already has.

Her account

Her description of what happened, preserved as she provided it.

Her material

Photos, videos, screenshots, messages, documents and other digital material.

Her timeline

When information was submitted and what was subsequently added.

The originals

Original material kept separately from AI-generated transcripts, summaries and organisation.

Her choices

Nothing should become a police report simply because she told Didi.

04 Our principles

A simple conversation.
Serious infrastructure.

Designed for evidence integrity from day one. These are principles we’re building around — and asking partners to help us get right.

Encryption

Protect sensitive information at rest and in transit.

Integrity

Cryptographically hash original digital files so subsequent alteration can be detected.

Provenance

Record what was received, when it was received and what subsequently happened to it.

Separation

Keep originals distinct from AI-generated transcripts, translations, summaries and other derived material.

Consent

Let the woman control whether to keep her information private or share it through an appropriate support or reporting pathway.

Preserve what was provided.
Make its history clear.

Didi will not claim that a piece of information proves an offence occurred.

05 The missing layer

What should exist before a woman reaches the system?

India is increasingly digitising criminal evidence, forensic investigation and electronic case workflows.

Police-side systems such as eSakshya are part of that shift. Didi explores the step before them: helping a woman preserve what she has, even when she hasn’t decided what comes next.

Designed to complement existing justice infrastructure.

06 / Beyond reporting

The decision remains hers.

Not every woman will want to report. Didi should respect that. Over time, we’re exploring four possible pathways.

Keep it private

Preserve what happened without sharing it.

Get support

Connect with an appropriate lawyer, counsellor or partner organisation.

Contribute anonymously

Choose to contribute sufficiently anonymised information to aggregate safety signals.

Report

Prepare preserved material for an appropriate formal reporting pathway.

Didi Signals

Many experiences never appear in official crime statistics: following, persistent harassment, catcalling, unwanted touching and unsafe transport experiences.

“Women have recently reported repeated following around this area, particularly after 9 PM.”

With optional participation and appropriate anonymisation, aggregated reports could help communities and institutions understand patterns. These would describe reported experiences, rather than label a street “dangerous”.

07 The first prototype

Start small.
Get it right.

The initial prototype will focus on a useful, understandable way to preserve information.

WhatsApp-first access

No new behaviour to learn.

Natural conversation

Type or speak normally.

Secure preservation

Keep original submissions and their provenance.

Structured chronology

Organise what she provides without changing the original account.

User-controlled export

Create an organised record for a lawyer, support organisation or police.

Clear next steps

Explain available options without making decisions for her.

08 Founding partners

Help us build
Didi properly.

We can build the technology. We’re assembling the people who can help us build it responsibly.

Didi should not be designed from Berlin in isolation. We’re looking for people and organisations in India who bring practical expertise, trust and on-ground relationships.

Lawyers

Bring experience in criminal law, sexual offences, stalking, harassment, digital evidence or women’s rights. Help us design around what happens in police stations and courts.

Survivor-support organisations

Help make Didi trauma-informed, safe and useful for women experiencing distress.

Universities & women’s networks

Help test whether women understand, trust and would use Didi — and eventually help it reach them.

Digital-forensics specialists

Help design evidence preservation, provenance and export correctly.

Creators & community builders

Help make Didi something urban Indian women know, remember and feel comfortable sharing with a friend.

Public institutions & funders

Help test whether Didi can complement India’s existing women’s-safety and criminal-justice infrastructure.

Didi is intended to operate as a nonprofit initiative, free for women. We’re looking for Indian partners who bring the expertise and relationships that technology alone cannot provide.

Our founding principle

A woman shouldn’t have to know whether she’ll report tomorrow to preserve what happened today.
